Learn the Human Skeletal System Anatomy & Function

The human skeleton is a complex system that is comprised of 206 bones.  These 206 bones are classified in to two systems: the axial skeleton, which is the trunk and torso, and the appendicular skeleton, which is comprised of the limbs.  There are four main classification of bones in the human body: long bones, short bones, flat bones and irregular bones.  Long bones make up the limbs.  Short bones are usually grouped together to strengthen the human skeleton.  Flat bones protect vital organs and also are muscle attachment sites.  Irregular bones are comprised of bones that do not readily fit in to the other three categories.  An adult skeleton contains 206 bones while an infant has 350 bones which eventually fuse together.  Over half of the bones in the human body are located in the hands and feet.  To view comprehensive details of each bone of the human body please visit out Skeletal Directory.
